This last week was a week of victories and triumphs in Christ. We held our annual Leadership Conference here in our church in Puebla. We do the conference in the month of May in acknowledgment of the Battle of Puebla here in our city. This time we had four great preachers: Pastor Luis Ramos from San Luis Potosí; Pastor Luis Parada from Long Beach, CA; Pastor Ezequiel Salazar from Ontario, CA and Pastor Kevin Wynne from Mexico City.

Our first night we had 18 Pastors visiting from different cities and states and we also had 280 people in attendance. Our second night (Tuesday night) we had 350 people in attendance and 23 Pastors visiting from 8 different states. We had to rent a church building close to our church in order to fit the people. Our little auditorium only seats 100 people. Wednesday night, which was our last night of the conference, we had over 200 people in our church. 100 in and 50 in the patio, plus many kids in the nursery and classrooms.

We had 14 people that surrendered to serve God full-time. Praise the Lord, seven of those were from our church. Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning we also had preachings until 2:00 pm. In total we had 21 sermons and teachings. If any of you are interested to get a copy of these, let me know. They are all in Spanish.

Thank you for your prayers for the conference. We ended the conference very tired, but happy to serve a wonderful God.

Brother Jason Knabb and his family

This last Tuesday and Wednesday we had the Knabb’s staying at out house. Brother Knabb and his wife are serving the Lord in the south part of the state of Veracruz, in Jaltipan. They brought with them Brother Manuel and his wife and three kids. Brother Knabb and his wife Sarah (Sloan) have six kids! So, we had a total of 18 kids and 6 adults in our house… clearly outnumbered! Sarah was in Bible college at the same time I was, and I had not the privilege to know her husband that much, but few hours with them were enough to get to know them better and enjoy their company even more. Brother Manuel is a faithful servant that decided to homeschool their three kids — they also attended the Homeschooling Conference that I had a part of last week in Queretaro, where Brother Steve Miller serves.

Mother’s Day

Today we celebrated Mother’s Day at our church. We had 50 moms and they all got a rose, with a special note and a nice picture with a Bible verse. At the end we had cake and some fellowship. I preached 7 Great Things that we can Lear from 7 Great women in the Bible. They all enjoyed the service and we had a good time in church.

We also gave out some certificates. Some baptism certificates, some for those that finished the Basic Discipleship Lessons, and some for those that finished the Advanced Discipleship Lessons. Pastor Luis Ramos preaching in Cuatla Morelos at a Family Conference

This week was a busy week. Monday and Tuesday we went to a Family Conference in Cuautla, Morelos. Brother Peter Duke is the Pastor of “Iglesia Bautista del Señor Jesús” in Cuautla, Morelos, which is a little over an hour south-west from Puebla. The first day we took 25 people from our church and the mission church, and the second day we took 30. The guest speakers were Brother Tommy Ashcraft from Monterrey, NL; Brother Luis Ramos from San Luis Potosi, and Brother Kevyn Wynne from Mexico City. It was a blessing and an encouragement to see this church that is about three years old holding a conference like this one.

Homeschooling Conference in Querétaro

Homeschooling Conference in Queretaro with Missionary Steve Miller

Friday and Saturday we were in another conference in Querétaro. Brother Steve Miller invited me to preach in his first Homeschooling Conference at his church. Many families from different states came to the meeting. Some as far as Saltillo, Coahuila, which is 8-9 hours north of Querétaro. Brother Miller (who also graduated from Oklahoma Baptist College) is doing a tremendous work in the east part of the city of Querétaro. His vision is to help Mexican families understand the very need to homeschool their kids. We do homeschooling and that is one of the reasons he asked me to preach during the conference. Another two men from his church thought with more detail about homeschooling. I left the conference with two words in mind: Protect and persevere. We need to protect our kids from public schools and persevere in teaching them the Word of God.

Dia del Niño in Mexico

Today we celebrated ¨Día del Niño” in our church (Kid’s day.) We had a big cake, toys, a puppets show, clowns, pizza, a piñata and much candy! Our daughter Rachel invited our neighbors and they came! Dad, mom and their two kids. (It is very difficult in Puebla have neighbors come to our church because people in Puebla are very private.) So… we were very excited to see our neighbors come to church. We had 153 people in attendance, 11 first time visitors and 2 people saved!Thank you for your prayer for our ministry here in Puebla.

Our Mission Church

Our mission church in the south part of the city has been praying to have 50 people in attendance for their 6th month anniversary. Today the mission church turned 6 months and they had exactly 50 people! Yesterday they had surprisingly 24 people going our for soulwinning time! We need more churches in Puebla. Our church is full in capacity. It just makes sense to built mission churches all over the city. When we first came we did not have any kind of help from churches in the area (there were not any). But now we can start a mission church with some of our existing members that are too far to come to our church. Please pray to come to Puebla and start a church with us. 2011 Leadership Conference

We are only two weeks away from our annual conference in May. We call it our Leadership Conference for Pastors and Workers. This year I have invited Pastor Ezequiel Salazar from Montecito Baptist Church in Ontorio, CA; Pastor Luis Parada from First Baptist Church in Long Beach, CA and Pastor Luis Ramos from Bible Baptist Church in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

We are expecting to have over 150 people come from five different States. Please pray for us and for the conference. Last year we spent 2,200 dollars, and we are expecting to spend about the same this year. I praise the Lord for people in our church that are willing to give for this preaching conference in Mexico. A lady in our church gave me $1,000 dollars last week and yesterday a man in our church gave $500 dollars towards the conference. Praise God! God always supplies.

If you know anyone in the area that would like to attend our conference, please let them know. We start Monday May 7th at 6:30 pm. We don’t have room in our small auditorium to put all of the people, so we are renting a place for the conference.

Six First Time Visitors

Today we had six first time visitors. Three of them came because they say the sign outside our church… (We have a new sign). And two other visitors came because of our ad that we have in the Yellow Pages. (We spent $1,500 dollars last year for this ad). The couple that came because of this ad in the Yellow Pages said that they had never been in a Christian church before. They arrived early and it seem that they were very interested in the preaching. The wife got saved! The husband said he was saved because a someone else at work led him to Christ. They are Catholic and are looking for a good Christian church to attend to. They looked us in the YP and found out that we were only blocks away from their house! They said the are coming back. We had a total of three people saved! on Sunday, and 130 people in attendance.

Cinco de Mayo Parade in Puebla

Every year we go to the Cinco de Mayo Parade in our city and give our thousands of tracts. This year we are giving away 20,000 tracts during the parade. Please pray for this. We would like to see people saved.

Many in the States wrongly believe that Cinco the Mayo (5th of May) is our Mexican Independence Day. But that’s not true. Our Independence Day is on September 16th. I think that is easier to say “Cinco de Mayo” than “Dieciséis de Septiembre“! Cinco de Mayo is the commemoration of the Battle of Puebla. We won a battle against the french, but later on we lost the war. Praise the Lord that once we are saved we are not losing any more battles nor wars because Jesus will be the winner after all. Many people here believe in the holy death. Many. They are proud of themselves saying that the holy death defeated Jesus on the cross. But they fail to recognize what Revelations 20:14 says, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” We win!

Ladies Conference

This last Friday and Saturday we went to Texcoco, to visit Primera Iglesia Bautista de Texcoco. We took 18 ladies from our church and Bro. Tim Aguiar took 8 ladies from his church. Bro. Aguiar helped us to take the ladies with his mini-bus.

Nicole thought two times and I had the opportunity to preach once. At the beggining I kept saying “hermanos” which means, brethren. Instead of “hermanas”, which means, sisters. If any of you are interested of the videos in Spanish, I can post them later on when I have them ready in this post. Just let me know. It might help someone you know, but remember, they are in Spanish.

In Church

We had a good church service. We had two first time visitors and also two saved! One of them came because we gave him a track a week ago when Bro. Manuel Garcia and I were soulwinning in the area of Cruz del Sur in Puebla. (This is the area we are praying about to start a new mission church this year). Praise the Lord Leo came and at the end of the preaching my heart rejoiced seeing his arm up wanting to get saved! We are already seeing God’s hand opening doors and getting people saved in this part of town. Please pray for Leo that he will continue to come. Also pray for Pablo Hernandez, a member of our church. His wife just texted me to let me know that he had been drinking again. I love this family and I pray that he will get convicted by the Holy Spirit to stop drinking.

Our Daughter Sarah getting baptized

Youth Conference in Cuernavaca, Morelos

From Monday to Wednesday we took our youth group to a Youth Conference in Cuernavaca to Iglesia Bautista Monte Abarim, whose Pastor is Brother Alejandro Ramirez. We had 27 young people from our church plus another 20 from Brother’s Tim Aguiar’s church from East Puebla. A total of 50 attended the conference just from Puebla — What a blessing! — 10 years ago I only took one young man to a youth camp and now there are more young people saved and willing to serve God!

When I went to Cuernavaca to pick up our young people, Bro. Tim Aguiar told me that his mini-bus broke down. The bought a mini-bus few months ago and they helped us take some of our young people. Pastor Alejandro Ramirez let us use one of his fifteen passenger vans to bring our young people back to Puebla. So… I brought 25, and Bro. Tim brought another 25! Praise the Lord we were not stopped and everything went OK! Here is a picture of the ones I brought (missing three on the picture.)

Couples Retreat in Toluca, Estado de Mexico

This last Thursday through Saturday my wife and I had the opportunity to attend the annual couples retreat that Bro. Victor Castillo organizes in Toluca. Bro. S. E. thought during the three days. My wife and I came back to Puebla blessed by the preaching of the Word and the fellowship.

Bro. Manuel Garcia

Today we had Bro. Manuel Garcia, missionary to “maybe Puebla” preach in our church. Bro. Garcia has been a missionary in Guaymas, Sonora for the last 7 years. God has put in his heart to visit the south part of the country of Mexico and see where He would lead him to start another church. We are praying for Puebla for more missionaries. Puebla, I believe, has the least amount of missionaries per capita in the country of Mexico. At the moment we have 3 IFB churches in the city. We surely would love for Bro. Garcia to come to Puebla, but we will wait to see what God has for him. If you don’t know were to go in Mexico as a missionary, please playfully consider the city of Puebla as an option. Please come and help us!

Marco Antonio asking Jesus to save him

Today, they all came back again to church. Marco Antonio’s wife was not at the house last Thursday, but she came today and she got saved!

Today we had many people visiting for the second time, two first time visitors and three people getting saved! We also had three baptisms.

Youth Conference in Cuernavaca, MOR

Tomorrow we are taking 25 young people from our church to a Youth Conference in Cuernavaca, MOR. (about 2 hours south of Puebla). There are five more going from our Mission church. Pray that God will keep them safe and that many of them will make great decisions for God.

Our Mission Work

Bro. Erik, who is in charge of our mission church came to me last week and said, “Pastor, we received $2,000 pesos in February, and $2,500 pesos in March for missions in the mission church. Is it OK to take another missionary for $500 pesos a month (about $40 dlls).” I said, praise the Lord! Take one more! Our mission church currently supports two missionaries and they will be taking one more missionary in less than six months. We are praying that God will give them an average attendance of 50 this month. This month also marks their 6th month since the mission work was open.

Our Church Building

As you might know, we don’t fit in our current auditorium. We are praying that God will show us what to do. We have two options: Expand our auditorium, or sell and buy a bigger property. We had already two arquitects coming to see what we can do to expand our auditorium. And we are also looking for another property that we could move into, without making big modifications to the building. Please pray that God will show us the way to know what to do. I would like to find a place that is perfect for the church to grow into. We have some extra money that we are saving for the expansion for the church, but we could also use it to buy a bigger property.

Our Kids

Pray for our kids. Hannah has a little flu, and I am awake with David right now (12:39 am)because he has an ear-ache. My wife, Nicole, said that she used to have the same thing when she was a little girl.

Today we started our spring program to invite people to our church. We have a competition to see who brings the most visitors between the men and the women of our church.

We are giving a small first gift to those who bring their first visitor. After that, the next award is for those that bring 5 visitors and then a bigger gift for those that bring 10 visitors.

Each visitor counts for 200 points. And each repeat visitor during our campaign counts for 100 points. That’s it. The person that bring the most visitors we are going to give them TWO free passes to go to the Restaurante La Estancia Argentina de Puebla. (Which is a very nice restaurant were every stake is worth $35 dollars – to my taste, the best in Puebla.)

The Spring Program will last for 7 weeks. Which will end right before our Big Annual Conference in May. This year we have invited Bro. Luis Ramos from San Luis Potosí, Bro. Luis Parada from Long Beach, CA, Bro. Alejandro Córdova from Celaya, GTO, and Bro. Ezequiel Salazar from Ontario, CA. Please pray that this conference will be a blessing to the preachers, pastors and missionaries in the area, as well as the people from the different churches around Puebla.

Please Pray For More Churches in Puebla

This last Friday I receive a phone call from Bro. Manuel Garcia, a current Pastor in Guaymas, SON. He said that he has been praying to come to Puebla as a missionary. I mentioned to him that we are also praying to start our second mission church here in Puebla in the west side of our city. (About 6 month ago we had a married couples meeting in an area names Tres Cruces ‘three crosses’ and God laid in my hart to start praying for this needed area. About 500,000 people live in the area of our city still unreached. Puebla has over two million people right now!) So, I mentioned all of this to Bro. Garcia and he got all excited about coming to Puebla. He is visiting us for a survey trip next month. We would like to help him to start a church here in Puebla, but we can only help with about $30 or $40 dollars a week.

God has also laid in my heart to start one mission church a year here in the city for the following ten years. Please pray for this project. Maybe God can use you to come and start a church with us and be a blessing to the people of Puebla. My desire is to see dozens if not hundreds of churches that reach the lost here in Puebla.

If you would like to commit to help Bro. Garcia start a church here in Puebla, let me know. I know that were are going to need money to rent a building. Buy some chairs. Get a projector for him and speakers and mics. Maybe you can even pray to buy him a car. I am serious! While he was in Guymas, he said that many churches in the States donated vans for him so he could pick up people to bring to church. He said that he is not bringing any of the vans because they are needed in the church that he started 10 years ago. What a blessing.

Last Saturday we were invited by Bro. Tim Aguiar –our friend here in Puebla — we need more friends like him –for his daughter’s birthday. We also met Bro. Dale Aguiar for the second time. He is preaching in Bro. Tim’s church this Monday and Tuesday. We are taking our church over to hear Bro. Dale preach and I know it will be a blessing. It was a blessing to hear him preach in our church about a year and a half ago before his son started his own church in the East side of Puebla.

Our Church Expansion

Last week we also had two architects come and see our church to give us an estimate to know how much will take us to expand our church auditorium. Right now we can only fit 90 people and every Sunday we had to put chairs in the aisles and outside the auditorium. Please keep us in your prayers as we wait and see how God direct us in doing this. We are expecting two more architects this week to come and give us estimates also. We have saved some money, but we still don’t know if it will be enough.

Bibles

If you know of anyone in the States that ships Bibles to Mexico let me know. Lately, we have had many people in our church asking us for Bibles. We need about 50 Bibles right now to give away. People want Bibles but for many of them they are too expensive. If you can donate some Bibles to us, that will be a blessing.

Picnic in Puebla - Parque Ecológico

Today was a very exciting day. We had 200 people in church! 140 in our own church and 60 in our mission church which is 3 miles away. Bro. Erik is in charge of our mission work and he is doing a good job there!

We also had a missionary visiting our church this morning. Brother Guillermo Acuña, missionary to Tequisquiapan, Mexico, preached in our church. He did a good job preaching and we certainly would like to take him on as one of our missionaries. Currently we have 18 missionaries that we support on a monthly basis.

We also praise God for the 15 visitors that we had this morning and 2 more visitors on our evening service. We had 9 adults getting saved and it was certainly another blessed day and victory for our church.

After the church service in the morning we headed to the park for our first picnic of this year. The park’s name is “Parque Ecológico de Puebla”. When we first arrived in Puebla 10 years ago, this park was not very clean and had few services. Now is totally a different park. It has a man-made-lake, play grounds for the kids, areas to play basket-ball, football soccer. And different areas to have bar-b-q.

Our Bible Instituto keeps going strong. We have 9 in the Instituto and one of the highlights is that every Friday night we have a different Pastor that teaches on “How To Start a Church.”  So far we’ve had 7 pastors and we are expecting to have 8 more to come and teach. If you know someone that is a pastor or a missionary in Mexico or South America, let me know so that we can send them the material and videos that we are recording. We are also going to publish all the material and videos on our website: Instituto Bautista FE.

Please pray for our school teacher, Miss Gaby, that broke her arm last December in a car accident. Please also pray for Brother Raul Castillo, who is our sales rep with the El Fundamentalista Magazine, and has had high blood pressure.  (Our Christian magazine that we print here in Puebla every two months.)

One of the highlights of our church is our Missions Conference. This time we had Missionary Ron Goodman and Nick Sutmaier. They did a very good job, and at the end of the conference, God allowed us to double our Faith Promise for the year from $6,000 dollars to $12,000 dollars. Lord willing we will be able to take on more missionaries.
Also, next semester we are having 5 of our young people going off to Bible College. We already support 3 of them with $50 dollars a month, and this will allow us to help the other two.

Faith Baptist Institute

We are now in the second year of our Bible Institute of our church. This semester we have 12 students that are studying hard in the institute. Three of them come from one hour away three times a week from a little town. They are a very poor family but are excited to learn in our institute. The cost for each student is about $100 dollars a month per semester. If God puts in your heart to help any of these students, it will be a real blessing for them.

50K Tracks For The Next Day Of The Dead

Every year, during The Day of the Dead, we give out 20,000 to 30,000 tracks at the main city cemetery. This coming year we would like to invite churches from the States to help us give 50,000 tracks during that same day, but in different cemeteries. It will be an exciting time to see all those souls going to the cemetery to place food in the tombs of their loved ones, and be able to give them a gospel track and try to win them for the Lord. Also, if your church could help us buy the tracks, which cost about $100 dollars per 10,000 tracks we will appreciate it!

Two Services For Sunday Morning

Starting January 17, 2010, we are planning to have two services for our church, since we do not have enough space during our Sunday morning meetings. The first service will be at 8:30 am, then we will have Sunday school, and then our 2nd service will be at 11:00 am. We ask you to pray for this as we need space and money to be able to build and expand our current auditorium.

Expanding Our Current Auditorium

Our small auditorium can seat about 100 people right now. We have about 150 people that come Sunday mornings and we don’t have any room available now. We are running out of space. We would like to build an auditorium that can seat 250 people plus a second floor with 7 classrooms to teach Sunday school. We have saved $5,000 dollars and we need an extra $15,000 to expand the auditorium and build a second floor for our church. Please help us to pray for this.

Bible Institute

Our Bible Institute is continue to grow strong. Right now we have 22 students! that come 3 times a week. We have 5 pastors teaching and we have a great spirit in each one of the classes. Next year we are graduating two more. So far we have graduated two. One will start a church here in Mexico and the other is married to a Pastor.

Next year we are planning to have a very special class on how to start a church. We are having 12 pastors that will teach a class on this on we are going to get all the material together and make it available to those that will be interested on it. It will only be available in Spanish.

Please pray for our Bible Institute. We would like to have dormitories next year and provide classes in the morning. I know this will be a great task, but as Bro. William C. said, “Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God.”

A New Mission Church in Puebla

This happened quite fast an unexpected. First of all, to God be the Glory! At the beginning of the year, around April, a lady in our Church brought a group of kids to church with some moms and dads. Next, they wanted to have a Bible study (the parents) in a house in their neighborhood. Next, they wanted to rent a store front. And now we have a mission church here in Puebla with 30 people attending. Today was their second Sunday! and they are very excited and thrilled to have their own place to meet. (Maybe they were a little tired of the small house). Bro. Erik, who graduated from San Luis Potosi, married one of our young girls here in our church two months ago (I married them) and now the are in charge of this mission church. They are about 45 minutes south of our church on bus. (It take about two hours to cross the whole city of Puebla from side to side on a bus).

Please pray for this work that it will bring more souls to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

We need more missionaries in Puebla

A month ago we had our monthly married-couples-gathering in the house of Bro. Jose Luis. He lives about 40 minutes west from our church. As we were driving closer to his house, my heart grew “heavy” as I saw the need to start a church in this side of our city. Puebla is the 3rd largest city in the country of Mexico and we only have three Independent Baptist Churches here. Please pray for more missionaries for our city. We will continue to do our work and ask God to help us meet this need.

Our Building Fun

At the beginning of the year we only had about 5,000 dollars to build and expand our auditorium. Now we have 5 times that amount. God provided through our people that amount. We are ready to start our expansion and I would like you to help us pray for God’s direction in this. Every Sunday we have our auditorium filled to capacity and chairs in the aisles.

People saved

Last Saturday we had 26 people going out soulwinning. My wife was able to lead a lady to the Lord as she was waiting (with four of our kids on the bottom floor of an apartment building) and I had the privilege to lead Alfredo to the Lord. Two others promised that they were going to pray that night and ask God to save them. We had a total of 6 people getting saved Saturday. Today we had three first-time-visitors and one of them got saved. Her name is Adriana. She was invited by our song director about six months ago. Today she finally came and got saved!

We need your help

As you know, we have a big family and many responsibilities in the mission field. The church is growing and we need more help in the ministry too. Our piano player has left (my sister Aglaee, who used to play in church, and her husband are now on deputation to star a church in Southern Mexico) and we need one too. So, if you know someone that knows how to play the piano, interested to learn Spanish, willing to help teaching kids, and have a great opportunity in the mission field, let us know. (We are willing to pay for airplane tickets.) Many will have a concern about safety. Puebla is a safe place in Mexico, contrary to the rest of the country. And the area where we minister is nice and fun. So… let us know if you know someone that will be willing to come to Puebla and help us in the ministry!

Last Saturday our daughter Rachel turned 9. Since we have 7 kids, we only celebrate and make a big birthday party every three years. And even though we have them every three years, it seems that we have a party every few months. We actually celebrate 1 birthday one year (our twins), two birthdays the second year, and three birthdays the third year.

We had a good crowd coming to our house and Rachel sure had a good time.

Last Sunday morning (yesterday) we had 7 visitors and 3 of them got saved. We again had to put chairs in the aisle.

Pray for us this Thursday as we go out of town to visit my sister Eunice in Iguala, GRO. She had a baby girl four weeks ago. I was also asked to preach in a 25th anniversary wedding of a family we knew long time ago when we lived in Iguala.

Our 9th Anniversary

Yesterday we celebrated our 9th Church’s Anniversary here in Puebla, Mexico. Bro. Matt Johnson, missionary in Tula, Hidalgo,  preached for us for that special day. He did an excellent job. Bro. Matt and I attended the same Bible Institute (Oklahoma Baptist College). He was a Senior when I arrived in Bible college in 1992. Hard to believe that is almost 20 years ago!!!

We had 185 people in attendance. The highest attendance for our anniversary. We try not to promote our anniversaries or conferences in our church since we don’t fit in our small auditorium anymore! In one of the pictures below, you can see that there are actually 30 people sitting outside the auditorium trying to listen to the preaching. We had at least one young man saved that morning! Praise the Lord.

Every year we have our famous and almost “World Wide Known Carne Asada.” Ok. At least known in our World Wide little community. For nine years in a row we have had a special barbecue — Arrachera Steak. We ask people in our church to bring rice, beans (mexican beans), guacamole, salsa (very hot), pico de gallo, tortillas, etc. This time, about six ladies in our church brought their special hot, hot salsas to my table for me to eat. They just want to give their pastor their best salsa, and also their most spicy hot! So, every time I had a steak taco I told the sister that made the salsa: “ok, I am having your salsa right now.” And, wow, their salsas were super hot. I was sweating. I wish my wife took a picture to show you how red my face was. Nicole had some special aprins made with the name of our church and gave them away to those that helped in the event. Thank you for all your prayers and support many of you have shown towards our ministry.

4th of July

Last week on Monday, we celebrated 4th of July inviting all of the people of our church. Every year seems that more people come! I guess they really enjoy the hamburgers. We had a good time. People here in Mexico appreciate what the United States have done, specially when refers to missionaries. They know that missionaries have sacrificed their lives to bring the Gospel to Mexico and now, there is a fire for Mexico to send too missionaries to other parts of the World.

Bro. Frank Caseres

This last Wednesday we also had the blessing to hear Bro. Frank Caseres, from Atlanta, Georgia, preach in our church. He was visiting Bro. Tim Aguiar here in Puebla for a conference that he had. Bro. Caseres was a tremendous blessing. He preached a great message regarding a growing church. There is a picture of him preaching below in the gallery… check it out!

Temple Baptist Church in Herndon, VA

This last Sunday, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit Temple Baptist Church in Herndon, Virginia. We were in the Washington, DC area for few days and we found this church close to the place were we were staying. The nice thing about this church (besides the great bible preaching and friendliness) is that they start at 9:00 AM! So, Nicole and I enjoyed this because the earlier the fresher our minds are, and also we get to do some sightseeing after church. The church was packed! They had over 25 visitors! I wonder if they included us? Anyway. Sunday School was great. And I learned a lot. On of the things I learned was that in the Air Force, one of the things they teach after you pass your Freshman year is this: Every Single Freshman Can Graduate! (This is a 5 point outline!)

1. Expectations or teaching. (We should teach our kids to have initiative)
2. Skills or training (Teaching is more than telling… is doing)
3. Feedback or inspect (Follow up with what you tell your kids to do)
4. Consequences or discipline (Consequences could be good or back)
5. Growth (This eventually bring character to your kids and they learn to mature)

Unexpected Funeral

Last Tuesday while I was out of the house visiting some members of our church, my wife got a phone call. They were calling from the States, from the Spanish Church of Fellowship Baptist Church in NC. They wanted us to visit some relatives, specially the father-in-law that was very sick and dieing. Wednesday morning, at about 5 AM, they called us back to let us know that he had already died. The good thing was that he was already saved. In fact I met him about 3 years ago when we went to the States for a short furlough. So, Wednesday morning I went to visit the family to see what we could do for them and how we could help them. At night I had the opportunity to preach to a large crowd in the little village about 30 from Puebla. I preached a clear Bible message on how to get saved. I don’t know if any got saved. No one raised their hand, but I pray that at least someone listened and made a decision. Thursday morning Bro. Alejandro Ruiz, my assistant and brother-in-law went back and preached during the burial.It’s interesting they way they do this in Mexico. Bro. Garcia died Wednesday morning and he was buried the very next day on Thursday!

Our Hospital Ministry

Last week we had 12 people saved at the General Hospital and 1,000 tracts were given out! This ministry is mainly for the ladies in our church and they Really do a good job talking to people in a very caring way and then showing them the Gospel and telling them how they can get saved. Please pray for the dear people that get saved because many times we don’t see them again. We try to get as much information as possible from them, including email address to stay in touch and email them Bible Studies. But many times the only thing we can get in their names since they don’t have a way to receive regular mail in their little communities in the mountains. We pray for them all of the time that they will find a good Bible teaching church. We have seen hundreds saved since the beginning of the year and over 20,000 tracts given just at this hospital.

3 saved on Sunday!

Thursday we had to fly out to the States for a quick trip and we came back to Puebla today (Monday). It seems that every time we are gone our church gets packed! We had on Sunday a full house with 4 first time visitors and 3 people that got saved!

Thank you for praying for Rachel as she is doing much better with her finger. (Someone threw a rock at it last week)

Nicole and the kids are doing fine. Caitlyn, our baby girl, is almost a year old on June 28. And in few day Nicole and I will be celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary!

Pray for Bro. Raul Castillo, the man that help us with the Christian Magazine El Fundamentalista, he was traveling in Torreon last week with his brother and a group of men, on a black Suburban, stopped them with large machine guns and granades, and asked them (not very politely of course) to get in the suburban. As this was happening, the police was driving by and the armed man quickly got on their car and left them unharmed. What would have happened if they got in the car with them? I think they would have killed him and his brother that was traveling with him. Please pray for them and please pray for our safety, as this happens more and more in the northern States. Puebla still a nice place to live, and we don’t want to have to go back to the States because of the crime.

Special Day - Bible Club in Puebla, Mexico

First, I would like to thank those that were praying for our Special Day this last Saturday. As you might now, at the beginning of the year, Mrs Medel — one of our Sunday School teacher of our church — was about to quit teaching a small group of kids (about 4 or 5) but decided to be faithful and keep teaching them every Saturday evening. Yesterday we were able to see again the fruits of her labor and faithfulness, as we had 185 attending our Special Day and brought many moms and dads and kids to our meeting. We had 53 adults and 132 kids.

Erick, a young man in our church that just graduated from a Bible Institute, asked me about having this Special Day. He is already going every Wednesday to this community and teaching the Bible Basics to these dear people.  This community is right at the south-end of Puebla. Anyway, Erick is going a good job about going and teaching and bringing people to church. So, it was his idea, and he was very excited about me preaching to the adults and him preaching to the kids (almost like a vacation Bible School) and having games and prizes for them as well.

We rented a “Barney custom.” Jorge, one of our young man in our church, wore the thing for over two hours and had a lot of fun going it. We announced to the community that we were having a Special Day with Bible Stories and games. We drove up and down the dirt streets and had lots of kids saying hi to Barney… I wish we had a Jonah-and-the-whale-custom, but this was the less dangerous one. Anyway, it was fun and Erick was able to preach and teach salvation to lots of kids and I had the opportunity to teach about how to be saved to the adults. I had 32 Adults that asked Jesus to saved them! and Erick said that many, many kids also got saved! Please pray for all of them that got saved that might continue with the Bible teachings that we have on Wednesday and that many of them will grow in the Lord.

Last Day of Classes in our Bible Institute

This last Friday we had our last day in our Bible Institute. We had over 20 registering at the beginning of the year and most of them made it to the end. I thought Bible Homiletics and my wife Nicole thought Virtuous Women to the ladies on Fridays. This year we did not have anyone graduate as this is only our third year, and our program to graduate is four years.

Next school year for our Bible Institute we would like to have six different classes with six different teachers. Lord willing in one year, we would like to have a regular-morning Bible Institute. Right now our classes are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 PM.

Family Bible Devotions

Today was a very special day because today we finished reading the Bible as a family during our family devotions! We read all of the Bible with our kids and we were all very excited about it. Tomorrow we are starting again. What a blessing is to have family devotions every night and see how God uses that to nurture our family and help us grow spiritually. We even took a video about our last chapter reading and singing with our kids. I encourage you to have family devotions with your family as well. You can start tomorrow and maybe we can even finish up at the same time in about 1,189 days! (as this is the number of chapters that the Bible has).

Today we had a full house, with three first time visitors and one lady saved.

Prayer

• Please pray for my son David as he apparently has allergies to we-don’t-know-yet what. It looks that is probably is a different detergent that we are using, and combined with his sweat, it causes the allergic reaction in his skin.
• For Nicole and her health
• For Rachel our daughter, as our neighbor kids smashed her finger with a rock – she is doing much better.
• For me as I have a “pink” eye. That is what Nicole calls it. It looks that is going to my other eye now.

Visiting Bro. Mike Patterson in Arlington, Texas

This last Monday and Tuesday we had the opportunity to go to the State Fair to give out Gospel tracts. And although we did not give out as many tracts as we were hope for, we had the opportunity to talk to people and invite them to church.

On Tuesday I was able to give tracts to about 200 Catholics at once! They all came down from 5 buses that parked right were I was standing. Each bus had 3 or 4 nuns that were in charge of their groups. I thought for sure that they were going to get mad because I was giving the tracts to their people, but also, I think they probably thought that I was welcoming them to the fair with the tracts. They all came from Oaxaca to the Puebla Fair and all took the tracts and many were reading them! One man specially was sitting down on the side walk behind one of the buses and apparently ready all the tract. Then I sat down with them and asked him what he thought about it. We talked for a while, and although he did not make any decision to accept Christ, he was very open to hear what I had to say. Please pray for this tracts and for this man that they will soon get saved.

On Wednesday, my wife, baby Caitlyn and I had the opportunity to go Dallas, TX for a quick visit. We attended the Family Conference held by the Spanish Church at Trinity Baptist Church, in Arlington, TX. Bro. Ricky Gonzalez is the pastor of this church and he is doing a tremendous work. Bro. Ezequiel Salazar preached two times on Wednesday night. The first preaching was to all the church and the second preaching was a class for the man and husbands. To say the least, it was an awesome class! He said that the reason our wives are not submissive to their husbands is because we are not the spiritual leaders that we ought to be. He also said that our wives need to know that we love them. Anyway, this is an update, not a sermon, right?

The conference ended at 11:oo pm! I was tired, but I enjoyed seeing and hearing Bro. Salazar. His wife Miriam was also there. She thought a class for the ladies, and my wife said it was very good. She is already practicing some of the things she heard! — Gracias Hna. Miriam!

Saturday night we had the privilege to see my good friend, Bro. Mike Patterson. I believe I met Bro. Patterson for the first time when I was 14 years old. He pastored Mount Abarim Baptist Church in Cuernavaca, Morelos for 12 years. During his time in Mexico, Christians in Mexico learned to love him. He left, I believe, in 1996 to take over the ministry in Arlington of Mount Abarim Baptist Mission International. Anyway, I surrendered to preach on July 24, 1992, under the preaching of Bro. Mike Patterson. I love him and miss him… so, we visited him and his dear wife. We had a good time at one of our favorite restaurants, Cracker Barrel. The following morning we visited his home church which is Worth Baptist Church of Arlington, TX. We had a good time and the sermon by Pastor Weaver was encouraging and challenging!

During the time we were gone, Bro. Abraham preached a good sermon in our church. Our church was packed here in Puebla. They say that they had 8 extra chairs outside the auditorium! Praise the Lord.

Please pray for this Saturday, as we are having an special meeting at one of our new missions. I shall explain why is a new mission: Two weeks ago we celebrated our “Dia del Niño” which is a big day celebration for all the children in Mexico. A lady in our church brought 27 kids and 11 adults… from a far away suburb south of Puebla. They all wanted someone to go and teach them more about the Bible on Wednesday nights! So, I asked Erick, a graduate from Bro. Luis Ramos Bible Institute in San Luis Potosi, to help and teach them and preach to them. They are all excited about this new mission and we are going to have a big day this Saturday. We are expecting over 100 people to come from this poor area of the city. Please pray that I might preach the Simple Plan of Salvation to them and see many of them get saved.

On other good news: As we were gone, not only we had a good attendance in our church, but a man in our church called me to let me know that he wanted to give $2,500 dollars towards the church building expansion! Praise the Lord for this also! We only have room in our church auditorium for 120 adults, and we need more room. We are praying to expand our auditorium this year. Preaching in Mexico City

Few months ago, Missionary in Mexico City, Brother Clint Rardin invited me to preach for his Missions Conference. Yesterday my wife, our two little girls, and I got on our fifteen passenger van and drove a little over two hours from Puebla to Mexico City. Driving in Mexico City is not that easy, but with the help of maps, and an Iphone that has GPS, it was easier than ever. My wife did most of the looking (at the GPS) while I did the driving.

As some of you know, I was born in Mexico City, but I really don’t like driving there, much less living there. I praise God for those that have given their lives to reach the city where I was born… few years ago! Also, I rejoice to know that there are more and more that are reaching this — some called the biggest city in the world — city! During the conference yesterday I met some pastors that are already doing a good job starting churches here. They graduated from Bro. Kevin Wynnes’ Bible institute. One of them is in Apizapán, and the other one is in Delegación Madero I believe. I am sorry, as I don’t have the names of these faithful servants.

Today I had the privilege to preach again. (I preached last night after their missions banquet too). We had a good number of people. The auditorium was filled and I believe there were 4 or 5 visitors. I think two people got saved! There was even one baptism. Their church building is beautiful and is right behind Walmart and Sam’s Club Toreo. Their location is perfect and they have room to grow. They could probably fit 300 one day! Today they maybe had over 150.

Bro. Clint Rardin and his wife are from the same Bible Institute my wife went to, Fairhaven Baptist College, so it was good for Nicole to be able to spend some time with them.

After church, Bro. Clint took us out to eat next to Sam’s, to a restaurant that is well known here in Mexico called VIPS Restaurant Toreo.

After lunch we said bye to them and started to head back to Puebla. Nicole keyed the directions to go back to Puebla, but something really funny happened. The GPS enabled phone now said that it will take us 1 day and 4 hours to get back!!! I though… either the phone is wrong, or there is a LOT of traffic to get back to Puebla. We started driving and obviously the GPS was giving us the wrong directions. I told Nicole that something was wrong. To make sure to check the settings. That is when she realized that it was giving us “walking directions” to Puebla, and not “driving directions”.  After she changed the settings, voila, Puebla all of a sudden was 2 hours away!!! They should make an app that says: Hey… you are either running very fast or are on a car, but this is not walking!! Or that says: I am sorry, but it appears that you are cheating and you for SURE are not Walking! — you get the idea.

Anyway. We made it 10 minutes before church in Puebla. I had the blessing to blessing to preach to my dear people and I sure enjoyed it! Bro. Abraham preached while I was gone Sunday morning and Bro. Juan Caserez thought Sunday School. My brother-in-law Alejandro right now is in Chicago visiting his brother Cristian who just graduated from Bro. Elmer Fernandez Bible Institute in Elgin, IL. Pray for us as we are taking a quick trip this Wed. to Dallas, TX. Also, pray for our church as tomorrow we are going to the State Fair here in Puebla and will try to give 20,000 gospel tracks over a period of five days. Thank you!

Arturo Muñoz, Pastor Luis Parada and Pastor Luis Ramos

This last Monday we started our Biggest Conference of the Year which is our “Conferencia de los Fundamentos.” This year we invited Pastor Luis Ramos from San Luis Potosí, Pastor Luis Parada from Long Beach, CA, and Pastor Alejandro Córdova from Celaya, Guanajusto. It was a great Bible conference to say the least. God blessed in a tremendous way and we had many testimonies from people that came from afar and also people from our own church that the conference was a big blessing for their lifes. We started our conference Monday afternoon with two preachings and continued with five sessions on Tuesday morning and two more preachings on Tuesday night. We had the same schedule for Wednesday. We spent over $25,000 pesos but it was well worth it. At the beginning of the conference we only had like $500 pesos and God provided exactly what we needed for the whole conference. I don’t know the exact number that we had every night, but it was probably close to 250 people. We were hoping to have over 350, but still God moved in a marvelous way. I would like to thank all of you that knew about our conference and that were praying for us.

Now that the conference is over, we are getting ready to start our building plan. We have over $13,000 dollars to do this and we are excited about expanding our auditorium. We know that it is going to be a challenge and we ask you to pray for this as well. If you would like in any way to help with this, please let me know. Every dollar counts! As well as every prayer! We will be updating you with our progress and we hope to finish this as soon as possible. Today we had over 160 people in church and there was no room to seat everybody in our small auditorium.

Mother’s Day

In Mexico, Mother’s day is celebrated on May 10th. Every year we invite all the mothers to come and spend a special day in our church. Today we had 46 mothers! Many of them were brought to church by Mrs. Medel, the lady that I spoke of on our last update. And every year we have two or three special gifts that we randomly give away to them. Two year ago we had a huge big nice microwave! This year we had over $100 dollars worth of gifts. Some small gifts include a nice 6×8 picture with a beautiful background and a Bible verse. We also give them one rose to each one of them. And then the three special gifts: A nice mirror with a light, a set of pans, and a set of pirex glass bowls, which we bought at Costco here in Puebla. Well… One of the special gifts went to Mrs. Medel — the lady I told you about last week — I believe God rewarded her efforts and faithfulness. Another special gift went to Mrs. Tere, which help Mrs. Medel with the Bible club that they teach every Saturday. (God also rewarded her sacrifice and love for the kids.) And the last gist went to a lady that has been faithful to our church for over a year now. She told me, Pastor, can I take the mirror home. I just like it! I said, if your ticket gets picked, you can take it! … and guess what happened? She won the mirror that she wanted, and she was very excited and happy!

Today we had two first time visitors and one man saved!

Mrs. Lupita Castañeda with her husband

Today was a good day! Not that past Sundays haven’t. But today was our last day (out of seven weeks) of our Spring campaign. Praise the Lord we had 173 people in church. I believe that we had over  46 first time visitors and 7 of them got saved! Not including many kids that also came to church for the “Day of the Children” which Mexico celebrates to all the kids on exactly April 30. We also had 4 baptisms and a day full of blessings everywhere.

At the beginning of the year, I went to visit Mrs Medel. She is a lady in our church that holds every Saturday, a Bible school for kids near her house. The kids in this area are very poor. She was getting discouraged because she was not seeing any results. She started with 10 kids, but after few weeks, the devil was already working to destroy what she was trying to build for God and the attendance went down to 3 kids once a week. She said to me: “Pastor, I will not quit. If God wants me to keep teaching this three kids, I will continue doing so.” I was very surprised for her strong stand for God.

She kept being faithful. She kept praying for her little group of three kids. She kept teaching them. Little by little God started to bless her faithfulness. When we started our campaign she got encouraged again and she told me: “Pastor, I will bring many kids to church so they can hear the Word of God in church.” Well, her faithfulness paid of. Today she brought 27 kids to church and 11 adults. Six of the seven adults that God saved today were her visitors. She brought them to church and they got saved. Glory be to God!

This teaches me a lesson. No matter how difficult things sometimes are. We need to keep being faithful to God. We might only have few that we teach at some times. We might think that there is nothing else to do or nobody else to win for Christ. But that is exactly what the old devil wants us to think. That there is no one else to reach. But if we keep being faithful to God, God sooner or later will bring victory to our lives.

I wish you could meet Mrs. Medel. I guess I forgot to tell you how old she is. And my guess also is that she is probably 65! She makes the best Verdolagas En Chile Rojo that have ever eaten! Please pray for her so that she keeps being faithful. And pray for us that we can take this lessons and aply them in our lifes.

Bon-Fire In Our Church And Destroying CDs

Today we had an exciting evening. We had a bon fire at our church after our evening church service. It all started with my wife Nicole teaching our Sunday School teenage girls two weeks ago. She mentioned that we needed to get rid of our worldly possessions and let God use them more effectively. I also preached for the last two weeks about leaving the worldly things and follow Jesus completely. It all started to build up and today we decided to to a bon fire at the church. Since we don’t have a lot of space for an actual bon fire, we also brought small wooden sticks and burn them at the outside patio that we have in our church grounds. Everyone wrote the sin that wanted to leave on the piece of wood and we made a small fire. A lot of our young people brought their music CDs, movies, cassette tapes, and some clothes that were immodest. (I did not see what kind of clothes were inside some of the bags, but I am pretty sure they were immodest.) Instead of burning the CDs, we destroyed them with our own hands and threw them in the trash. We had two big trash bags full of all of the the things that our church people brought. It was a fun evening and I think we are going to do this once a year.

In the morning we had a good church service with lots of people in attendance. We had close to 140 people in church. Bro. Alejandro Ruiz who is my assistant and brother-in-law preached a good sermon during Sunday School. He said that he prayed for a teaching and God gave him a sermon instead. He preached about Living The Best You Can For God Today – in Spanish. It was a good message.  If any of you would like a copy in Spanish let me know and I will send you one via email.

In the evening, besides having our bon-fire, we also had Bro. Fidel Silva Pablo missionary to Bolivia present his ministry and preach to us. If any of you are looking to support a missionary in Bolivia, he would be a good choice. He went to Bolivia 10 years ago with $400 dollars-a-month-support. He is doing a good job there. He is a soulwinner and is doing a tremendous work in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Bro. Silvio After Thowing The Bowl

Saturday we had a married-couples bowling here in Puebla. We had two couples that had never bowled before. It was fun to see them play and have fun. One of them, Bro. Silvio and his wife, had been coming to our church for a little over a month now. His wife found us online and started to listen to the preaching of our church online. She came to church and brought her husband a two weeks after. Her husband had never been in a Christian church and got saved! Now they are coming very faithful to our church services. Please pray for them as they grow in the Lord. And Bro. Silvio, ended up winning in bowling with a score of 107.

Please pray for the nice of one of our church members. Her name is Aranza and she is having open-heart-surgery this Wednesday. She is a year and a half.

This morning we had two first-time-visitors and one of them got saved!

Our son Japheth turned 10 last Monday! and this coming  May we are going to be here in Puebla for 10 years now! Wow, time just goes very fast. This reminds me that we need to double our effort to reach our city and country for Christ.
